In today's vlog, I ask a very important question: What Does AMERICA do better than BRITAIN ??? Except this is silly because there are hundreds or thousands of things America does best.
My FIRST every experience of American Football: • SCOTTISH REACTION TO A...
It's awesome to see so many people from America who celebrate their Scottish and Irish ancestry so keenly, and come on to RUclips to seek out people celebrating these cultural nuances. You only have to look at the success of the Try channel, Facts channel, Joel & Lia and Diane Jennings to see how people love seeing Irish and British People trying American things for example.
I feel sad that, for our part, so few in Scotland celebrate this amazing connection between Scotland and America, and I want to change that. So to start, here are 10 of my first impressions of America, and then i'll go on to talk about other aspects of us culture from a Scottish perspective.

🐺🐗🐆 Just to clarify something. A turn of phrase we in the UK use is “that belongs in a zoo” or “that’s a zoo creature”. We obviously don’t mean that literally. It basically means a wild animal that could be exotic, unusual or dangerous, of the type we simply don’t get in the UK, and the only place we would ever be able to see them is in a zoo. Even if we are opposed to zoos as I am, I’ll still use that phrase which basically means, wow that’s a scary/cool/unusual animal.
Brother if you ever get a chance visit the swamps here in South Carolina. Just make sure you have bug spray and watch your step. You can't always see the snakes before they see you.
@The real glasgow but they dont leave the doors open at a zoo..thank god. We say 'born in a barn'
I'm SO glad you chose to clarify that statement, because I was formulating a lengthy rebuttal which, thankfully, I now have no reason to type.
Grew up in "the woods" in Rhode Island. The forest was relatively calm and safe in the 60's and 70's, when I was a child. In my life I've had the great pleasure of watching otters, mink, weasels, skunks, and various ground rodents, also have since had the honor of seeing the return of wild turkey, beavers, bears, and the coyote/dog hybrid which now fills the niche of the wolf/coyote.
But you guys gave us Dr. Who for 50 plus freakin' years! Thanks! (Fell in love with Tom Baker when I was just a child.)
Shaun we in Oregon dont use your zoo phrase! Was watching your Portland shirt video, listening to u talk about cougars! I grew up west of Portland ore living now in eug or!,a few hot summers ago, a housing development displaced Cougars and wild turkeys! Walking down the street I came face to face with a female cougar! Never ever run from one!'they are cats! If u run they will chase u down play with u like prey and maybe kill u! When they want food they also imitate a human baby cry! So ud better know the differences in crimes between cougar and humans!-?my daughter faced that situation! And luckily didnt go to investigate! An hour later she learned it had been a cougar soliciting assistance!
As a landscape photographer based in the PNW, I've had black bear encounters and survived them all right, despite one that was a little touch-and-go. I've only ever seen Grizzlies from a vehicle (thankfully, they give me nightmares) and have only glimpsed a mountain lion (possibly). But I have to think about such things (and snakes) all the time while I'm out and since I've been following more Scottish photographers on IG I've wondered what it would be like to explore mountains like you have there and never have to worry about getting "et by a bear." Oh, and we have wolves now where I live in Oregon. I've even seen one, not 45 minutes from my house. I've been obsessed with wolves since a child. So that was one of the highlights of my life when that wolf stepped out onto the logging road I was walking, took a good look, then vanished back into the forest.
Difference between US and UK:
In America, we think it's cute how Scotts think a hundred miles is a long way.
In the Scottland, they think it's cute how Americans thing a hundred years is a long time.
I've driven 100 miles for a burger. It's an hour and a half away. I once WORKED at a place 96 miles away and drove there and back EVERY DAY. ;)
Rs Rt - It's Scots not Scotts. Scotts is a lawn care company. And if you're wondering it's no Scotch, either. Scotch is a liquor or a brand or cellophane tape.

As a well traveled American. I do love going abroad. It’s fantastic to see other cultures. It’s nice to hear positive things about American! Thank you Shaun!
When my older sister went to college she eventually spent a year at Sussex. I was fourteen at the time and at the end of her year we all flew up to see her. After 2 weeks my parents left me with her to go up to do another month of just she and I wandering England and Scotland. She and I had so much fun but the point of the story is the day we went to Loch Lomond I refused to stay on the trail. I dragged my sister all over the beautiful Woodland area surrounding the lake until we were completely lost lol. After two hours we decided to just head in One Direction. It was the wrong direction and wound up at a fence. After arguing about who gets to find out if the fence is electrified or not (i lost lol. Even after reminding her that she was 20 and she's had more years than I did therefore my life was worth more) we couldn't tell where a road was and we could not get our bearings to get back to the lake so I was sent up the hill to see which direction we needed to go. About five minutes later after walking up and over the hill my sister said she heard me screaming and she saw my head pop up from the other side of the Hill. I was running. I was being chased by a bull LMAO. It's really hard to run while you're laughing at the same time. But I live. I'm 38 now and that was one of the funniest things that have ever happened to us in our whole life. Thank U Scotland!

If you like nature you really need to go to the Rocky Mountains and hit some National Parks like Yellowstone and Grand Teton
He would also probably like the clannish Scots-Irish culture of the inhabitants of the Smokey Mountains/Appalachia. He would probably understand a lot of their dialect and mannerisms. Just keep an eye out for the bears, cougars, rattlesnakes, copperheads, moonshiners and wildcats. lol
Lassen NP is a great lesser known park. Also Glacier NP is great too. Yosemite can be great if you go when it's not busy.
Ava Gentry or the Scots-Irish festival in Estes Park outside Rocky Mountain National Park

I live in NC, in the US. I enjoy your videos. You are so gracious when talking about Americans.
I'm sure you have seen a lot of things that you didn't particularly like or agree with. I've watched videos about people from other countries and they were very critical, so it's so nice to hear someone being so nice and complimentary about the US. Thank you for that. You are very interesting.

You just brought back so much pride and nostalgia of living in the USA. I live in Florida and I watch so much British television that I caught myself thinking in a British accent.
@The real glasgow - This is why American shows are cut up for commercial breaks. It's annoying but it isn't a tax. And those shows that are exported are paid for by the company broadcasting it. Which in turn get paid by advertisers or by streaming costs. Which means UK tv production companies are making more money on the back end.

I really like that you approached the cannabis issue so openly. My body is beyond destroyed from my time in the military, and so many people look down on me for using it just so I can forget my pain in my body, and just feel normal. I respect that a lot. Many people think if you smoke it, you're just a junkie, and that's coming from someone who lives in the second state to legalize it.
For medical use its amazing.
My issue with my nephew is how much he and his wife smoke it like it's cigarettes all day long.. they have 2 children/toddlers that rarely get to go outside except when parents are having a joint.
I know this isn't necessarily the pot that's the lazy parenting but I smoked it some in younger days and know it's part of the issue as it makes you lazy/tired.
Honestly, if they just had one joint a day in evening..I wouldn't take issue at all with how they live.. but like we had family over to our home for pool day when my father died, just so everyone could get outside and eat, visit, allow the children to play, adults to visit, etc.
They only stayed an hr cause they had to get home to smoke their weed.
They use the excuse the kids need a nap.. but I offered them to put them to bed in the house .. nope.. cause they can't smoke pot at my house they had to get right home.. they literally don't go an hr without pot.
Then there's ppl like you whom it helps so much..I have fibromyalgia so I understand if there's something that helps, by all means use as needed and you shouldn't be looked down upon at all.

eh most states except some of the smaller Eastern ones have a majority rural area. maybe even new York
I also thought: “Florida? Rural?” But it’s true, tons of rural Florida, same with Louisiana, Nevada, and more. But New York? No, Downstate is easily 15 million, upstate is rural and urban, so out of another 6 million Buffalo, 1.5 million, Rochester 750,000; Syracuse and Binghamton/Ithaca 750,000 and Albany 500,000= about 5 million more urban and a million or so rural. So...
American here 🖐 🇱🇷....Thanks for the friendly and outgoing comment. Hollywood and people like the Kardashisn's give us regular people a bad rap. I love Absolutely Fabulous, Father Brown, Graham Norton, Peaky Blinders, Ripper Street and lots more.
You put a Liberian flag😆
@@airracer28 ...😆😆😆 oops...I meant 🇺🇸
@@klusa5716 I just wanted to let you know😉
@@airracer28 wow I took 1 look at that flag and never would have noticed it's a different.
@@Kruppt808 main difference is a smaller field of blue, and slightly larger stripes
Personally I don’t know any American who watches a lot of British TV over American TV but I’m sure you guys have great shows too!
I can listen to you all day long and then some more!
I'm an American who loves Downton Abbey.
Me too, but i wouldn't want to live in that world. It's such a good thing that America got rid of all that royalty nonsense. It's unworthy of free men. If it was up to me i'd hang the lot of them.
Are You Being Served is my favorite British show
Only Americans like Downton Abbey. It is a very American view of England.
@@Jordan-Ramses America is ruled by Trump. I'd take the Queen any day.
@@helenwood8482 written and performed by British people.
50 people liked this video so much that they turned their phone upside down and liked it again
Thank you for all your points, but #11 was the best. We have been fighting for years! from Florida =)
I love when Brits (or even Democrats) talk down to me like I'm a barbarian for owning guns, and they're like, "Why would you need a gun?"
Me: "'Cause my neighbor's dog was mauled and eaten by a mountain lion, and we have bears in the nearby mountains, too. Also rattlesnakes, and crooked politicians, lol!"
everybody in Europe seems to despise americans like we hurt them or something idk its weird. But yea we got animals here and you could never ban guns. You are not going to be able to take the guns out of the hoods. Gangs will get stuff off the black market. It would be a warzone if they tried to ban guns
Spot on. And let’s not forget how people choose to ignore that our actual violent crime rate is among the lowest per capita in the world. And even then the crime is mostly centered in democrat controlled urban areas, as opposed to more suburban and rural areas where crime is lower, gun crime very low, and not run by gun grabbing politicians who do t punish criminals. And they sure do love us, our guns, and ability to use them when they need military assistance.
I'm a democrat. yet I have a 30-30 for the coyotes. Cougars here too, the local university has a radio collar on the one that goes through my yard but the odds of me seeing her before she sees me is basically zero.
We don’t have to need a gun. We only have to want a gun. Thank God for a free country.
Rowdy Grunt gun crime is lower in suburban areas because less people live there 🤦♂️
Fun video, I grew up on British comedies like Monty Python, Benny Hill, Are you being served?, Mr. Bean, and Absolutely Fabulous. I would love to visit Scotland and England sometime. Keep up the great work!! :)
You forgot "The Young Ones"......haha
@@nevermind-he8ni I forgot about that show, that was funny too. Thanks for reminding me. :)
😂 Shaun you would be something to watch during sports (Football) season in America. Cut you loose in a motor home and follow a University Team. It would blow your mind, to see pride, spirit, and enthusiasm of the students and parents. The game would be fun to watch too.
St Myles Even though I’m a fan of another SEC school, I would suggest that Shaun would be in much more capable hands if he were to travel with the LSU folks.
bigricester I’m also a Tiger...a Mizzou Tiger, and I’ll always be extremely grateful that the SEC gave us a home after tejas ruined the conference that we invited them to join. I lived in Shreveport 35 years ago and spent many a weekend in NOLA, but I didn’t truly understand LSU until I had a work assignment in Baton Rouge off and on for about a year. I spent many happy hours at Chimes enjoying the oysters.
So glad I found you. Enjoying your posts so much. I love
Scottishs accent and phrases!
Y’all really don’t have drive-through banks?!? That is so crazy to me. Love the videos! I would love to visit Scotland someday!
We do
We live in our cars in the US.
I certainly do not watch Dr. Who on Amazon Prime, I have no idea what you're talking about.... **whistles innocently**
I think TV productions are half and half. We seem to pour more money into production and UK seems to pour more money into writers. One reason I watch shows from other countries is that the formulas are a little different. Canadian sci fi is kicking ass currently.
Cannabis. Not a consumer but a supporter due to it's medical benefits. Chemo treatments leaving you uninterested in eating? Here's some weed and a plate of food. Pain killing effects and munchies!
Luther? Luther who? 😁

I live in Mississippi now but i was born and raised in Montana. You need to go if you come over again it is probably the most beautiful state and has awesome national parks and good people.
I spent some time in Missoula, I really enjoyed Montana.
Kelsi I have relatives who lived and live in plains Montana ever been there? I mite move there! As an Oregonian we like Montana dont have sales tax! I appreciate this about montana!

Great video. Thank you. I’m an Air Force brat, and I grew up in Europe (born in Madrid). I am always fascinated still to see us Americans through the eyes of “foreigners.” 😋
Thank you for this thoughtful and generous video.
I love how Shaun says the word “placeeeeees.”
PockASqueeno and “houseees”🥰
I live in Ohio and I grew up watching Benny Hill, Monty Python's Flying Circus, Absolutely Fabulous, and I loved Coupling!

Hey Cousin. Glad you enjoyed your trip yo America. We love ya
Thank you for all the kind words about America 🇺🇸
"Some of the more rural states... like Florida." HAHAHAHA!!! 🤣 Love you, Shaun!
I thought that was funny as well.
I wasn't sure if it was a joke, or he might not have seen the mid-west. Fields there can go miles in one direction. Of course, each state has some agriculture.
I live in Alabama and thought I knew what rural was until I drove through some of the Midwest. It’s much different.
Very interesting vid! Thanks for sharing. I do think that a reason we're optimistic is because of the people who came to our country full of hope. When you build a nation with adventurous, hopeful people, it is indeed infectious.
Just discoverd your challlel and I really enjoy itmy ancestors are the Ramsay's of Dalhousie. Will subscribe!
Thanks Carolyn, great to have you here
I thought I was learning a Scots word, "dure". Then I realized you were probably saying "dour", which we pronounce "dower".
Red Dwarf and Absolutely Fabulous are hard to top....
RUclips American Red Dwarf as the USA copied it but only did one show. They were also going to make Only fools and Horses but changed there mind at the last minute. Imagine an American Del Boy lol.
hell yes red dwarf!
You forgot _Blackadder_ and _Faulty Towers._ And I can make a case for _Keeping up Appearances._
I watched several of your videos this morning. You really do a great job. Anyway really, you really need to just move here. 💜
You just open my heart! I've been American but according to my grandparents I'm like a quarter Scottish they moved after the war. Scottish grandpa and Irish grandma

Shaun: "I've got no skin in the game.'"

Yes, wildlife. Seen in my yard during 2019 alone: bears, dear, and wild turkeys, of course. And, one cougar, two bobcats, one gray wolf, one hawk who enjoyed visiting with me. This in a residential subdivision.
I'm glad you enjoy our holidays! We love a good excuse for a celebration. Thanksgiving is very unique, in that it is a holiday based on gratitude and being with your loved ones. I think every country should have a holiday like that. You could start your own there! :)
They find it peculiar because the whole story is fabricated.
@@deborahelliott833 Probably so.... LOTS of so-called "history" is fabricated. BUT, I still think the idea of a holiday based on gratitude is a great idea. :)
